In Washington State, an issue of Asians not being considered POC has arisen in a school district. North Thurston Public Schools is a school district in Washington, serving over 15,000 students throughout 22 schools. The district has received backlash for grouping Asian students with white students on a “Monitoring Student Growth” page. “Students of color”, including Black, Pacific Islander, Native American, Hispanic, and multi-racial students, were put in a separate category. The report showed that there were “opportunity gaps for historically underserved students of color and students who are experiencing poverty.”
After many Asians in the community complained about the misrepresentation of Asians in this report, the district issued a statement, claiming they were trying to focus on the differences between the impoverished and wealthier students. Since the statement has been made, the report has been taken down. |
