Netflix has recently come out with a new musical animated comedy/science fiction/fantasy movie starring the voices of Cathy Ang, Phillipa Soo, Ken Jeong, John Cho, Ruthie Ann Miles, Margaret Cho, and Sandra Oh. It tells the story of a little girl named Fei Fei who struggles with the death of her mother, her father’s new marriage, and her love of space and the famed Chinese legend of the moon goddess Chang’e. Some of the life lessons taught in this movie are to honor those who you love and lost, to pursue the things you are passionate about, and to have faith in what you believe in.

Chang’e is the Chinese Goddess of the moon and a very prominent figure in Chinese mythology. She is married to the mortal archer Hou Yi (后羿), who also appears in a lot of legends of Chinese mythology. Her most prominent story is the one featured in Over The Moon. Many years ago, in a very distant past, ten suns rose together and scorched the Earth and those who lived on it. The archer Yi shot down nine of them and was given the elixir of immortality as a thank you. He didn’t use it, as he didn’t want to be immortal without his wife, Chang’e. When Yi was away, his apprentice broke into his house and tried to force Chang’e to give him the elixir. To prevent him from taking it, she drank it herself and started flying away. She then decided to live on the moon to stay close to her husband. When Yi returned, he was distraught and began worshipping her as a goddess. This story and Chang’e are known to be the origin of the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival.
