In January 2021, three girls in Dallas Texas named Kate LaGere, Annie O’Grady, and Bianca Watson sold a Mahjong game with “a respectful refresh”. They called it “The Mahjong Line” and it featured a variety of vibrant and offensive variations to the classic game. The sets, priced at around $325-$425, received excessive attention online, and it’s not because of the bright, “minimalist” designs the games had. They were accused of culturally appropriating a classic Chinese game by replacing the traditional Chinese symbols with a more western and modern touch.
